Hannah became fascinated by the Women's Royal Naval Service when she read 'Coming Home' by Rosamund Pilcher as a child. This led her to complete each of her dissertations on the subject of the Service.

Within her undergraduate degree in Sociology at the London School of Economics, Hannah interviewed Wrens who had served in the Second World War and wrote her thesis on the nature of women's lives in that period. During her Masters in History of Warfare, at King's College London, she undertook research into why the service was absorbed into the Royal Navy in 1993, charting the decision making process for this. Following her Masters she began a teaching job as an A Level Sociology teacher at Godalming College and completed her PHD part-time at King's. She is an active member of Girlguiding (which had a close affinity with the WRNS in both their early years) and runs a Brownie group in Surrey.
